Japanese Culture


I started visiting Japan since 1998. I made it a point in every visit to understand various facets of Japanese art and culture. The different aspects of Japanese art and culture facinated me.

The various facets of Japanese Arts and Crafts include ->

- Japanese Architecture, Garden design, Ukiyo-e

- Bonsai, Calligraphy, Japanese Dolls, Ikebana, Origami

- Bunraku, Literature, Movies, Music, Poetry, Kabuki, No

- Martial Arts, Swords

- Japanese Tea Ceremony

  2. Ukiyo-e is written in Japanese as "浮世絵". It means pictures of the floating world. "Ukiyo" means floating world and "e" means a picture. It refers to the impetuous young culture that bloomed in the urban centers of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Osaka, and Kyoto that were a world unto themselves.
    The original subject of "ukiyo-e" was city life, in particular activities and scenes from the entertainment district. Beautiful courtesans, bulky sumo wrestlers and popular actors would be portrayed while engaged in appealing activities. Later on landscapes also became popular.
